The Creation of the Student Government Association
This forerunner to the Student Council was responsible for all student activities except athletics. On September 14, 1922, the faculty advisory committee approved the Georgia Tech Student Council constitution and by-laws. By the end of November the new Student Council had received the approval of the entire faculty and the student body and began its operations. It held trials for students accused of cheating on examinations and term papers, promoted the honor system (work previously done by an Honor Court also established by ANAK), helped straighten out the financial problems of the student publications, and generally carried out the duties defined for it in the constitution and by-laws. The original members of the Council were nominated by ANAK, but after the first year, the Council did its own nominating and the student body voted on the candidates. From its inception the Student Council was a force for a better student body. With varying degrees of success it has continued to be an important factor in the increasing maturity of the Tech student. Today, the Student Government Association is one of the top SGAs in the state of Georgia and in the entire Southeast. In addition to representing all undergraduate and graduate students' concerns, the three branches of SGA administer the $2.3 million Student Activity Fee, judge cases of non-academic student misconduct, and appoint student representatives to Institute and Faculty Committees. |
