Post-Clinic
Requirements to Be Completed
Due to time constraints and the nature of some of the merit badge requirements, we will not complete the entire merit badge at the clinic. The scout will need to complete the following requirements on his own:
Requirement 7, Part B:
Sketch the phase and the daily position of the Moon at the same hour and place, for a week. Include landmarks on the horizon such as hills, trees, and buildings. Explain the changes you observe.
Resources
Scouts may find the following resources useful in completing the merit badge requirements:
Sky and Telescope: Register for an account (it's free, and you can opt out of receiving emails from them) and sign in to use the tools below.
• Interactive Sky Chart: By entering your zip code and time zone, you can view the night sky (including constellations and planets) for any date and time at your location.
• Interactive Observing Tools > Almanac: By entering your latitude and longitude, you can get information on the rise and set times of the Sun, Moon, and planets for any date at your location.
Stellarium: A free, open source planetarium program.
Worksheet 1: Completed at the clinic. If you did not finish the worksheet at the clinic, the following information will help:
• Big Dipper sketches: sketch the Big Dipper, north star, and the horizon, once in the early evening and then again several hours later.
• Visible planets observation chart: use Sky & Telescope (see above) to complete the chart showing when the visible planets can be observed over the next 12 months.
• Face of the Moon sketch: sketch the face of the Moon and label five seas and five craters.
Worksheet 2: To be completed after the clinic (sketches of the position of planets and phases of the Moon).
