A Word from the President

Mela Johnson,
2007-2008 BGSA President
PhD Candidate - Bioengineering

On behalf of the Black Graduate Student Association at the Georgia Institute of Technology I am pleased to tell you about the exciting activities we have planned for this year. BGSA provides unity, support and academic guidance for the African American graduate student body and this kind of support system has helped make Georgia Tech a leader in producing minority doctoral degrees in science and engineering, a distinction of which Georgia Tech is very proud. Our members contribute to the diversity of the Georgia Tech campus by conducting innovative research in various technical areas and also invest their time in helping the campus and local communities. BGSA was very successful in 2006-2007, building many key relationships with the community, campus, alumni, and corporate sponsors. This year our goal is to maintain these connections as well as form new ones.

This past year, BGSA was able to create great campus connections by mentoring undergraduate students and by combining our efforts with other student groups. We look forward to furthering our campus relationships through tutoring, GRE prep sessions, and graduate school information sessions. In addition, BGSA members were very involved in tutoring and mentoring at local Atlanta schools during the year. We intend to build on these programs by increasing membership, involvement and reaching out to elementary, middle, and high schools. We plan to hold college application information sessions for high school students and their parents.

In addition to building on our current connections, we look forward to forming stronger ties within our membership by providing constructive and valuable activities, events, and meeting topics. BGSA had tremendous successes in reaching our goals in 2006-2007. We are excited about the possibilities for BGSA in the coming year! Your continued partnership will help us attain our goals and continue to make an impact in the community.
