Thank you for your interest in the Learning Assistance Program.
The Learning
Assistance Program is part of the Freshman Experience Program. We seek tutors
who not only have academic ability, but also have a good interpersonal
skills and a desire to assist first-year students in their transition from
high school to college. Thus,
we are seeking students with a good heart as well as a good mind.
The Learning Assistance Program is always taking applications, but we are
not always hiring for immediate openings. Your will be considered for hiring
once we receive your completed application.
The application requires (1) reference form and an
academic transcript. The
application should be complete in order for you application to be reviewed.
Please read all the instructions on the application. If you meet the
requirements, you will be asked to interview. There is an interview process
that will last about 30 minutes and you will be asked to complete
"technical questions" in calculus, chemistry, or physics. We are
looking for your ability to explain the problems and your ability to
explain concepts to others.
The academic requirements are a 3.0 GPA with a B or better in Calc 1 &
2, Physics 1, & Chemistry 1. You
must be able to tutor in ALL of the core freshman subject areas listed
above. We are looking for individuals that are comfortable tutoring
FRESHMEN and can remember back to Freshman level work in Calculus, Physics
& Chemistry. Graduate
students are also eligible for this position. The Learning Centers operate
on a drop in basis so you could be asked any question about Calculus,
Chemistry, or Physics.
We offer drop-in tutoring in nine residential learning centers across
campus. Tutors are required to work two shifts per week Sun-Thursday
sometime between 8pm - midnight. The schedule is
set for the semester and then you are required to find your own substitute
if you can not work a particular night.
Our openings for new Tutors are only on East Campus, we
do not have any openings on West campus for new Tutors. Starting pay rate
is $8.50/hr for undergraduates and $11.50 for graduate students with
opportunities for raises either by semester or by year depending on
performance.
