Spring 2009 Tryout Information
There are quite a few guidelines listed here, but most are just there to cover loopholes. More guidelines may be added by the officers of the Golf Club. If any of these rules are changed or removed, all members of the Golf Club will be notified immediately.
- Tryouts for tournaments in which the Georgia Tech Golf Club participates shall be conducted on an individual basis. However, members are encouraged to play tryout rounds with other members.
- Qualifying for the team will be solely determined upon total score. In no way are players selected by seniority, captain’s picks, or anything other than total score.
- Tryouts will be conducted on a level playing field. Being a club officer, an upperclassman, or a club veteran gives you no advantage over anyone else.
- During tryout rounds as well as competition rounds, the USGA rules of golf must be followed along with any local rules of the course.
- Players may walk or ride during tryout rounds. However, most tournaments will be walking events. Please keep this in mind when conditioning physically to walk 18 holes.
- There are no cuts during tryouts other than the announcements of the final roster for tournaments. Tryouts do not end for anyone until the last tryout has ended.
- Tryouts may be conducted at any regulation golf course as long as the course has a slope and rating. Par 3 courses and executive courses are not regulation golf courses and may not be played for tryouts.
- Golfers must turn in a minimum of 3 18-hole scores to the president during the tryout period. Scores may be turned in by e-mail, by phone, or in person. Scores must be turned in with the course name and the rating and slope of the tees played.
- Players may play as many times as they so choose during the tryout period. However, golfers must play a minimum of 3 rounds and only the best 3 will be used in determining rank in the tryout.
- Tryout rank is determined by the average handicap index of the best 3 rounds.
- A player’s handicap index is calculated with the following formula: (((SCORE - RATING) x 113) / SLOPE).
- Example: a score of 78 from the blue tees at Browns Mill (rating 70.9, slope 123) would be (((78 - 70.9) x 113) / 123) = 6.52
- The average handicap index of each round will be rounded to the nearest 2nd decimal place
- The best 3 rounds are determined by the lowest 3 indices from individual rounds.
- Each stroke counts. Do not use equitable stroke control. There is no maximum score on a hole.
- Due to time constraints and other reasons, you may choose to play only 9 holes at a time. However, all 18 holes must be played in order for a score to count. You may not play the same 9 holes twice.
- Tryouts will be conducted for each tournament.
- Tryouts for the first tournament of the semester will begin on the first school day of the semester.
- The tryout rankings will be posted on the club website and will be updated frequently throughout the tryout.
- Players must play at least one round within 10 days of the end of a tryout. This is to keep players from posting 3 low rounds early on in tryouts and then stop playing. It doesn’t matter what you shoot, but you must report your round to the president. 10 days covers 2 weekends, so it is ample time to play at least one round.
- Unless otherwise stated, scores must be submitted to the president no later than 10:00 PM on the Sunday prior to a tournament.
- On the Sunday night prior to each tournament, the final roster for the tournament will be sent out via e-mail and posted on the club website. The number of players that qualify will be determined by the number of slots available for the tournament (typically 8).
- Unless otherwise stated, at 10:00 PM on the Sunday prior to a tournament, tryouts for the next tournament begin. Players, including those that qualify for the tournament, may continue playing rounds to attempt to improve their handicap index and qualify for the next tournament (if we qualify).
- Rounds from the first tryout may be used toward the tryout for other tournaments later in the semester.
- If the team qualifies for the next tournament, players with the top 5 aggregate gross scores from the tournament are automatically exempt. The remaining 3 spots will be determined by the tryout rankings. Tryouts for the next tournament will still include the players that did not finish in the top 5 in the previous tournament, and their previous tryout scores may still be used. This is only applicable for official NCCGA events.
- Players with the bottom 3 aggregate scores from NCCGA events must play at least once before tryouts end for the next tournament. This rule is in effect to help these golfers improve their game. Also, if these golfers are not willing to improve their game, it allows for others to take their place.
- Tryouts for the Palmetto-Peach Cup and other non-NCCGA events will not determine spots for other tournaments.
- Tryouts begin again each semester. All rounds used the previous semester will be erased.
As you can see, tryouts are done mainly on an individual basis. You are responsible for playing by the rules of the game. Golf is a game of honor and integrity and, even though this is not a varsity team, there is no exception. It is up to you to turn in accurate scores and uphold the standards of the game. Anyone found doing otherwise will be disqualified from the team for the semester.
You are also responsible for turning in your scores on time, preferably soon after you finish each round. The final rosters for tournaments will be posted the night of the deadline. Late scores will not be accepted.
