Tech Takes first Meeting with USC
Tech 4, South Carolina 2
September 29, 2006
Georgia Tech went on the road again (third week in a row) and came away with a sluggish win over South Carolina 4-2 at the Iceland in Columbia, South Carolina.
As in the two past weekends, special teams played a big role in the Yellow Jacket victory. Three of the four GT goals came on the power play and the fourth was an empty netter late in the third period.
This was Carolina’s first game and while adapting to the new rule enforcement, the Gamecocks were taken out of their normal flow.
Captain Mike Zaucha opened the Jacket scoring unassisted on a two man advantage power play goal half way through the first period.
The game remained a 1-0 Tech lead until 9 minutes left in the 2nd period when Brendan O’Leary, on the GT power play, tipped in a shot from the left side on a rebound from Zaucha (assist) to make it a 2-0 lead.
With 4 minutes left in the period, South Carolina scored their first goal of the season on a 2 man advantage.
The Jackets, on the power play, scored quickly into period three on a rebound on the right side by Mike Zaucha (his second).
With 1:21 left in the game Brendan O’Leary knocked in an empty netter to ice the game.
Carolina did score with :33 seconds left on a two man advantage power play to make the final score 4-2.
The Yellow Jackets out shot the USC 38-32.
Goalie Nick Rice gave up two power play goals and made 30 saves.
