Saturday’s feature game was against the host University of Richmond and it was thrilling down to the final minute as Richmond fought back from a three goal 2nd period deficit.
The opening stanza was scoreless but Tech didn’t take long in period two to start the scoring blitz.
The first came just three minutes into the period when Brendan O’Leary fired a shot from the blue line that went in the upper corner. Assist went to B.J. Stapleton.
Less than 30 second later, Andy DeChirico scored on a scrum in front of the net (assist to Austin Kaase).
Two minutes later Tom Porter stole the puck deep in the zone and scored unassisted to give Tech a 3-0 lead.
But penalties finally caught up with the Jackets and after fighting off two in a row, Richmond got their first goal on the power play with 8 minutes left in the period.
Tech came back and scored their own power play goal from Porter (his second) and assist to Mike Zaucha and O’Leary). But Richmond got the final tally of the second on an even strength rebound shot and brought the 2nd period t a close with Tech leading 4-2.

Drew Baker scored from close in with assist from Christian Gattung and O’Leary. But less than a minute later Richmond came back with a goal of their own from a defensive turnover. And three minutes later, a power play goal by Richmond cut the lead to one.
Half way through the period, Tech came back with a power play tip in from B.J. Stapleton, assist to Tom Porter. Again Tech had a two goal lead at 6-4, but Richmond wasn’t finished yet.
At the 8 minute mark, Richmond scored on an odd man rush to cut the lead to one again. Less than one minute later Tech scored on a great shot off the face off by Arne Krogh from the point that went top shelf. The assist came from Dan Sweeney.
Tech back up by two. Victory seemed assured with less than two minutes Richmond was called for a two minute penalty. Richmond caught a rebound in the Tech offensive zone and rushed down to their end to score a short handed goal to make the 7-6.
Tech was given a penalty on the play with one minute left. They finally took care of the puck and the game.
Richmond out-shot the Jackets 38-36. Tech goalie Craig Tabita made 32 saves, the most all season long.
