The shorthanded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pulled a stunning upset over previously undefeated Georgia Ice Dogs 5-0 on Friday November 16 at the Cooler in Alpharetta. The Jackets dominated the neutral zone the whole game and prevented Georgia from setting up in the offensive zone and holding them to very few quality shots. Tech had previously averaged allowing 50 shots per game but limited the Ice Dogs to just 35 in the shut-out victory.
The scoring started early for the Jackets with just 53 seconds into the game, Andy DeCherico scored in close with assists to Dale Sharpe and David Means. This early goal also gave the Jacket fans something to cheer about and keep the players pumped in the early going. Four minutes later Tech had a 2-0 lead with a power play goal by Whitney Yiu with assists to Tom Porter and B.J. Stapleton. With only four playing on defense, four year player B.J. Stapleton saw plenty of ice time and lead the defense to clog up the middle and in front of the net giving goalie Maxx Lucas plenty of time to see incoming shots. But Stapleton also had offense on his mind scoring the next two Jacket goals, both from the blue line and both power play opportunities. The first came with 13 minutes left in the opening period with assist to Drew Baker. The second came with less than a minute in period one and assist went to Baker again. That made the score 4-0 and the first period with Tech gaining confidence and the crowd buzzing with enthusiasm at the potential upset. Period two saw just one goal scored, but it was a dazzling end to end shorthanded unassisted goal by Whitney Yiu.
The third period was all defense by Tech and frustration was evident on the Ice Dog side and Maxx Lucas turned away shot after shot. Tech out shot Georgia 36-35.
The two teams will meet again twice during the month of January.
