Jackets open with losses to Embry Riddle and Florida
October 22, 2007

The Georgia Tech Hockey Club opened the 2007-2008 season with the Southern Region Opening Season Scramble in Birmingham Al.

The Jackets lost both games by a score of 5-3 to Emory Riddle and 5-0 to University of Florida.

The team played hard, but with many freshman, adapting to new players and lines made for some very sloppy play. Injuries also had an impact as Tech was down one player before the game started when Christian Gattung broke his wrist in practice earlier in the week. Then Tom Porter went hard into the boards in the 2nd period of game 1 and was out for the rest of the weekend with a heavily bruised shoulder.

Defense needs some work also as turnovers in their own end lead to some easy goals over the weekend. Freshman goalie Maxx Lucas had a work out as faced 42 shots in game one and 41 in game 2. Of the 10 goals in both games, there were just 3 even strength goals.

The Tech defense will need to step up in upcoming games to give Lucas some help.

The Jackets opening goal of the season was scored by Drew Baker with assist to Dale Sharpe. The other two goals were power play goals by Dan Sweeney and assists to Jeremy Spaford, Grant Weaver and Whitney Yiu.
