Tech Tops Alabama in Shootout
October 29, 2007

The Georgia Tech Hockey Club continued the 2007-2008 season with the Augusta Showdown in Augusta GA.

The Jackets came away with their first victory of the season with a strong comeback shoot out win over Alabama on Friday night. Tech trailed most of the game and were down by three goals late in the second period 4-1.

But they came on strong with three power play goals to even the score after two periods. Both teams scored a goal each in period three setting up the five minute overtime.

Alabama poured on the offense in the OT, but the Jackets defense kept the Tide in bay setting up the exciting shoot out. Dan Sweeney got the first goal for GT and goal tender Maxx Lucas kept Bama scoreless until the 5th shooter. That set the stage for the game winning score by Drew Baker, Tech’s final skater.

The Jackets saw some Freshman step up and get their first goals: Marcus Lostracco and Fred Holgado.

Dan Sweeney had natural Hat Trick with three straight power play goals in the second period. Assists came from Whitney Yiu (3), Michael Midgette, B.J. Stapleton, David Means, Grant Weaver and Marcus Lostracco.

Maxx Lucas faced 45 shots and made 40 saves. Alabama ’s three of their five goals came from their special teams play.

Although the Jackets did not score in their 2nd game of the weekend against the University of Central Florida , they had some positives come out of that game.

UCF has a strong experienced team that caught some breaks in the first period to take a three goal lead. Overall, Tech played them strong in the early going.

As the game went on, the Jackets wore down and UCF got some easier goals. Two of the seven goals came in the last 2 minutes of the contest.

Maxx Lucas faced 49 shots in this game and made 42 saves.
