The Georgia Tech Ice Hockey Club was founded in 1973 by a small group of students eager to bring college hockey to Georgia Tech and the City of Atlanta.

Playing in local A and AA leagues, the team consistently posted winning records while growing in both size and popularity. Due to the scarcity of local rinks, players would often practice in the dead of night or drive as far as Stone Mountain just to get on the ice.

In July of 1979 the Southern Collegiate Hockey Association (SCHA) was established, which marked the beginning of organized college ice hockey in the southeastern United States.

Georgia Tech was an original member along with Auburn University, Emory University, Georgia State University, the University of Alabama at Huntsville and the University of Tennessee.

The SCHA was predominately composed of teams traditionally aligned with the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference.

Georgia Tech was very competitive while playing in the SCHA, winning championships in 1989 and again in 1997. The program has helped to keep the sport of ice hockey alive in Atlanta while professional teams have come and gone.

The highlight of the 1978 season occurred when Tech handily defeated Duke at the Omni arena after an Atlanta Flames game.

In the early 90’s, the team held several games at the Omni in conjunction with the Atlanta Knights of the International Hockey League, playing before tens of thousands of spectators.

In 1998, Georgia Tech became a member of College Hockey South. The team finished third in the league with an overall record of 14-7-1.

In January of 1999, the Yellow jackets played in the inaugural Memorial Health Hockey Classic Rumble in the Rink, held in Savannah.

The tournament featured teams from the University of Georgia, the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee. Winning both their games, the Georgia Tech team was awarded the inaugural Thrasher Cup, which was presented by the Atlanta Thrashers.

The American Collegiate Hockey Association formed a Division III for the 1999-2000 season. Georgia Tech joined and was ranked #1 in the country for the entire season.

The 1999-2000 team posted a final record of 23-6-1 while earning the C.H.S. Regular Season Championship and finishing 2nd in the ACHA III National Tournament.
