We have a meeting this Tuesday, October 28, at 11:00 AM in Student Center room 320.

Aerospace Engineering grad student and 2005 Astronaut Scholarship Foundation recipient Jarret Lafleur will be giving a very interesting presentation called “Atmospheric Entry for Human Mars Exploration: How to lose 20 Mach numbers in 8 minutes or less.” He’ll present an overview of the difficulties associated with Mars atmospheric entry followed by some results of a parametric trajectory study that he did at NASA JSC.

Come and find out more about what was announced at this year’s 11th Annual Mars Society Convention in Boulder, CO last week and what we have planned for this year.

There is a meeting Tuesday, March 11, at 11 am in Guggenheim Building (School of
Aerospace Engineering) Room 244. This meeting will be a send-off
ceremony for our Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) Crew 69.
This is a great opportunity to meet the crew and see what kind of projects
they will be working on. It is also a good time for you to find out how you can
participate in this unique program this year by signing up to be a mission
support volunteer.
Again, the meeting will be on March 11, at 11 am, in Guggenheim 244!

We will have a meeting this Tuesday, Sept. 25, 11-12, in Student Center, Room
319. We are very happy to have Jonathan Sharma from the Aerospace Engineering
Space Senior Design Team to talk about their award-winning project: “Pharos:
Shedding Light on the Near Earth Asteroid Apophis.”

Pharos is a robotic mission to the Near-Earth Asteroid Apophis to accurately
determine its orbit and perform science. It is designed to accomplish the
mission well under a $500 million cost cap and deadline for mission completion
by 2017.

Our next meeting will be November 14, not November 7th; please take the time on November 7th to go vote! We will discuss sending letters to our newly elected representatives to tell them why they need to support the space program. Please find out who your new representatives are and how to contact them, then come to the meeting and help us coordinate drafting and sending letters. As always, snacks will be served!

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION CONTACT (January 19)
Georgia Tech has been given an opportunity to contact the current crew of the International Space Station, Expedition 12, over amateur radio. One of the current crew members, Bill McArthur, is a Tech graduate (MSAE ‘83). Ten students will be asking the crew questions.

Live simulcast of the event will be carried on 91.1 FM in Atlanta, or www.wrek.org online. There will also be a group listening session at 10:00 AM at the Clary Theater in the Student Success Center.

Georgia Tech’s Crew 47 to the Mars Desert Research Station will be training together on a backpacking trip on a segment of the Appalachian Trail.
