History
Phi Psi Fraternity was founded by five students of the Philadelphia Textile Institute on March 18, 1903, to promote good fellowship, social interaction, mutual advancement of its members and the art of textile manufacturing. Beta Chapter was organized in 1904 at the New Bedford Textile School, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and the same year Gamma Chapter at Lowell Textile School was organized in Lowell Massachusetts. In 1906, the Fraternity was Incorporated under the laws of Pennsylvania. Delta Chapter was organized at the Bradford Durfee Textile School at Fall River, Massachusetts in 1909. Epsilon Chapter was Chartered in 1916 at North Carolina State College at Raleigh, North Carolina and Zeta Chapter was chartered at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1917, but owing to misunderstandings, the Charters for Epsilon and Zeta were revoked by the Grand Council in 1921. In May 1924, Eta Chapter was formed at North Carolina State College, Raleigh, North Carolina and on January 10, 1925 Theta Chapter was organized at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. In May of 1927, Iota Chapter of Clemson College in Clemson, South Carolina was given a Charter. On February 12, 1931, Kappa Chapter at Texas Technological College, Lubbock, Texas was given a Charter. On April 18, 1936 Lambda Chapter was Chartered at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn, Alabama. Mu Chapter was organized on May 5, 1961 at the Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville, Virginia and finally, Nu Chapter was granted a charter on May 10, 1996 at Southern Tech. in Marietta, Georgia.
Three schools in Massachusetts area merged in 1967 as Southeastern Massachusetts University (Lowell, New Bedford and Bradford-Dupree) located at North Dartmouth, Massachusetts where Beta Chapter remains in existence. Gamma and Delta Chapters were abandoned and Beta Chapter asked for inactive status in 1994. After many years of inactivity, Kappa Chapter was reactivated for several years during the 1980's, but again, Kappa has been inactive since the early 1990's. Mu Chapter in Charlottesville, Virginia was closed and merged into Eta Chapter when the Institute moved to N.C. State University in 2003. Currently, Beta, Kappa, and Mu no longer exist.
Over the years since 1903, there have been name changes in schools and chapters.
