This semester, we contributed to two charity groups, Habitat for Humanity and Goodwill Booksale. A total of 58 hours were worked for these two organizations.
Habitat for Humanity is an organization that makes low cost housing for poor families at a low interest rate. Each family pays about $40K for their house. It has been shown statistically that families who own their house (as opposed to renting) are more active, productive members in their community. As a bonus, brothers who participate in Habitat for Humanity, learn many skills that are useful in maintaining and repairing a house. This was a very popular event that we plan to do much more of this fall.
Goodwill Booksale raises money to help the needy. During this book sale we manned tables and stocked books. You would be amazed how much money people spend at this thing (single customers coming through buying $300 worth of books). The money from the book sale goes to helping the poor and, most notably, to training single mothers, who live on welfare, so that they can join the work force. We will be participating in this next Fall, too.
