Coaches

Dr. Robert L. Meredith (1980 - 1989)
Dr. Meredith was assistant professor of English at Georgia Tech and became coach in 1980. It was Dr. Meredith who instituted "The System" that Georgia Tech has fairly faithfully followed continuously to this day to develop excellent players year after year. It was also Dr. Meredith who innovated the match format of twenty toss-ups, untimed, on all thirty point bonuses all on academic material, thus making him a forefather of the ACF. It is for primarily this reason the ACF national championship trophy is named the Meredith Cup in his honor. Dr. Meredith coached Tech to three unofficial (i.e., non-CBI, pre-ACF) national championships in the 1980s.

Jim Dendy (1983 - 1996)
Jim has probably done more to enhance the competitive image of Georgia Tech's academic team than any other player/coach. As a player, he ranks as one of the greatest of all time. In his playing days, "Lafayette, Georgia's Most Famous Son" captained Tech to two CBI national runner-up finishes (1986 & 1989) in addition to another CBI Final Four appearance (1985). Jim also has a Jeopardy! appearance to his credit. Dendy coached Tech to a 1991 ACF national runner-up finish and to its first (and so far only) Meredith Cup in 1996. He's retired from the actual play/coaching of the game but makes occasional appearances at practices and tournaments.

Players

Shawn Askew
A former student at Georgia Tech, Shawn knew American history well. One of the most vocal proponents of ACF, like Charles Barkley, he spoke his mind. Shawn voiced his opinions on many flame wars on Alt.college.college-bowl and is rumored to be returning to Tech in the near future.

Avron Bernstein
Avron was on the late 1980s and early 1990s Tech Teams.

Patrick Brannon (1991 - 1996)
A product of Walton HS (Marietta, Ga.), Patrick was on the 1996 ACF national championship team. Patrick knew literature and film well. You want to know about the obscure beginnings of alternative bands? Patrick's the man. High school girls in rural Georgia Checkers are still trying to pick him up. Patrick is now naming cadavers at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta.

Scott Buckley
A former student at Georgia Tech, he is now working for Children's Health Care of Atlanta. The Georgia Tech Academic Team is indebted to Scott for his C programming abilities, used for our scheduling and tournament statistical programs.

Hing Chan (1992 - 1999)
A graduate of Georgia Tech, Hing was captain of the 1998 and 1999 Tech teams. Hing had every possible piece of knowledge related to the nation of France mastered. He is still involved with the team by coming by practices and serving as tournament director of the 1999 Heinrich Bowl.

Bill Crew
A graduate of Georgia Tech, he is now attending the University of Central Florida.

John Dinsmoor (1992 - 1996)
A Chemical Engineering graduate of Georgia Tech, John played during his freshman and sophomore years. He became especially irate, screaming "You a----le!" after teammate Al Przygocki arrived late at the 1993 Ludden Tournament after taking one too many shots of Robitussin. And it was true, the team could have won some more matches with Al being on time.

Robert Forsythe (1985 - 1992)
A graduate of Georgia Tech (1985-1992), he is now working for Booz Allen & Hamilton in Virginia.

Scott Gillispie (1986 - 1993)
A graduate of Georgia Tech, Scott is The Trashmeister. Play Team Trivia with Scott...win Team Trivia with Scott (at least a majority of the time). Scott won the 1991 Jeopardy! College Championship, receiving several marriage proposals in his fan mail afterwards :). He still is around the game, reading at various Southeastern tournaments during the year. Scott is now working for Lucent Technologies. He also recently (April 2005) appeared in the Jeopardy! Ultimate Tournament of Champions.

Chris Goheen
Chris Goheen is one of the "dinosaurs" of the Tech Academic Team. He played for Tech in the early 1980s with such talents as Chris Moody and Jim Dendy. Afterwards, he went to the University of Illinois and started up an Academic Team there. Now and then, Chris likes to team up with old teammates(and sometimes younger ones) and put on a whoopin' (as with Chris Moody and Long Nguyen on the Loose Cannons team).

Jason Hong (1993 - 1997)
A CS/Discrete Math graduate of Georgia Tech, Jason was on the 1996 ACF national championship team. Having never played in high school, he went on to lead Tech to many victories in his senior year as part of the "Yellow Peril" teams :). He created the Georgia Tech Academic Team Web Page. Jason can be seen listening to Chaka Khan with all the "freaks" at Berkeley. In his spare time, he is pursuing a PhD in Computer Science.

Jason King (1992 - 1996)
A Biology graduate of Georgia Tech, Jason was captain the 1996 ACF national championship team. Jason was a product of "Bible Bowl" competition (you've seen the Saturday Night Live skit..."Did you know the answer?".... not really quite like that, but as he described it, it featured no buzzers and you had to wait until the end of the question to stand up if you knew the answer). One of Tech's greatest players ever, he is arguably the greatest only-undergraduate player of all time. Always being surrounded by 3 teammates who could beat many other teams single-handedly did not showcase his talent very well. Jason betrayed his alma mater by attending law school at U(sic)GA.

David Levinson (1984 - 1989)
A graduate of Georgia Tech, he attended graduate school at UC-Berkeley, reviving their program. David played on the 1986 Tech team that was screwed by the College Bowl Co. in the infamous "Adam's apple" toss-up against Minnesota in the national championship final. David is now a professor at the U. of Minnesota.

Gavin Mead (2002 - 2004)
Gavin made it cool to not have an engineering or science degree during his tenure at Tech. After graduating with a degree in History, Technology, and Society in 2004, he quickly went back to work in the IT industry but is now working for a Big 4 accounting firm, where he gets to tell you how much your stuff is worth. During his years at Tech, Gavin was to American (and other) history what Shae is to military history.

Mike McCarthy
An IE graduate of Georgia Tech in 1983, Mike played from 1979-1983. He captained the Tech team in 1983 to its first ever CBI Region 6 championship, going undefeated in a 15 match round robin tournament at Florida State. "Unfortunately, the College Bowl company did not see fit to hold a national championship tournament that year." Mike is currently an Air Force officer working at the Pentagon.

Chris Moody
A graduate of Georgia Tech, Chris was on many of the late 1980s Tech teams that stomped over the Southeast. Chris is now working at Hazlehurst and Associates.

Mike Musgrove (1991 - 1996)
A Chemical Engineering graduate of Georgia Tech, Mike was on the 1996 ACF national championship team. Mike knew history & fine arts (painting & sculpture) well. Beginning his career at Tech with Toss-up/Interupt ratios of under 3 (unheard of at Tech), by his senior year, he consistently had Toss-up to Interupt ratios of over 6. Mike also has a Jeopardy! appearance to his credit, making it to the finals of the 1996 College Championship. A big country and karaoke fan, Mike is now living with his wife Amy and working in the panhandle of Florida and coaching the Taylor County HS academic team, his alma mater :).

Martin Poteralski (1990 - 1994)
An Architecture graduate of Georgia Tech, Martin knew all sorts of weird animals and eras of time as well as geography. He has been recently seen moonlighting as Sewer Urchin at UNC-Chapel Hill. Martin is pursuing a law degree there.

Al Przygocki
Al was on the Georgia Tech team that won Penn Bowl in the early 1990s. Who says Tech can't play timed and trashier events? This was after the team had wrecked their vehicle in the northern foreign snow. He is also well known in Tech circles for his love of Robitussin.

Alex Snoeren (1993 - 1997)
A CS/Math graduate of Georgia Tech, Alex played on the team when he wasn't with the band, playing soccer, TAing Computer Science classes, doing work in his 20+ hours of classes per quarter...You get the idea...Alex is currently pursuing graduate studies at MIT.

Saurabh Vishnubhakat (2000 - 2004)
Saurabh graduated in 2004 with a degree in Biochemistry and Spanish, taking a year off to sharpen his supposed skills. He is currently a doctoral student at Vanderbilt, where he enjoys partying with old money and spreading the Word of Mead. He revived Tech from the "dark years" of the previous administration to impose his own wacky brand of fascism as captain from 2001 until his graduation. He was, unsurprisingly, good for biology and chemistry but also excelled at all things Spanish and knew just enough about the other stuff to piss off specialists.

Stephen Webb (2002-2006)
Stephen graduated in 2006 with a degree in Physics, by far the most worthy of all science and quizbowl topics. In his persuit of becoming the next Richard Feynman, he is attending graduate school at SUNY-Stony Brook. He leaves in his wake suppsed supposed quizbowl romances and Robert as the team member with the most tenous grasp of reality.

Albert Whited (1984 - 1990)
A graduate of Georgia Tech, Albert can be spotted at various film festivals held in the Atlanta area. The Georgia Tech Academic Team is indebted to Albert for his donations through the years to keep Tech travelling. Albert works for BellSouth and is very active on the academic competition scene, directing at least one tournament a year and moderating in several others annually in addition to having a large role at the ACF national championship tournament every year.

If you are a GT Academic Team alumnus and would like to update/correct/include your information here, please contact Stephen Webb.
