"Guthrie's Ten Commandments for Writing Questions." 1. Thou shall write challenging but not impossible questions. 2. Thou shall write a balanced round (4 history, 4-5 science, 4 literature, 3-4 general knowledge, assorted others from geography, religion/mythology/philosophy, fine arts, etc.) [This assumes 20 question rounds] 3. Thou shall balance questions within disciplines, i.e. thou shall not write five astronomy tossups. 4. Thou shall write mostly multi-part bonuses. 5. Thou shall put pronunciations for readers next to foreign or scientific terms. 6. Thou shall not write false lead-ins to tossups. 7. Thou shall not write spelling tossups. 8. Thou shall not write questions which require the reader to interpret your answer (e.g. What is Romanticism?) 9. Thou shall include all possible alternate answers. 10. Thou shall remember that this is a game! Carol Guthrie Unofficial Addendum: Thou shall keep toss-ups to four sentences or less, and thou shall not write more than a few "For a quick ten points" questions for untimed matches. Unofficial Advice: If you are unsure, choose answers that you have heard of.
