Hints for Groups Asking for Funding

When bringing an allocation bill before the Senate expect to be asked a number of simple questions. Send a representative who is familiar with all aspects of the club, particularly the financial and membership aspects.

The following are some questions that are commonly asked by Senators to representatives of groups seeking funding.

  • How many members are in your group?
  • How many graduate student members do you have?
  • How many people are going to participate in this activity?
  • How many of the people participating will be graduate students?
  • What are the dues for your group?
  • How is dues money spent?
  • Have you done any fundraising?
  • If not, why not?

This list is by no means exhaustive, but having answers to these questions will make your time in front of Senate much easier. In many cases these questions will be asked by the Joint Finance Committee before the bill reaches the Senate floor, so be prepared with these answers at that point also.
