Preamble
Latinos constitute the largest non-organized community inside Georgia Tech. Therefore, this organization will provide the means toward the unification of this community and also toward the integration of its members in American society.
Article I - Name
The group shall be called "Spanish-Speaking Organization" (a Georgia Tech Student Organization), hereafter referred to as SSO.
Article II - Purpose
The objectives of this organization shall be:
1. To unify the Spanish-speaking community
2. To provide a medium for friendship through social and cultural contacts between its members
3. To promote social activities as a means for cultural exchange for the benefit of its members and the student body at Georgia Tech
4. To acquaint the Georgia Tech community about Latin culture through social activities.
Article III - Membership
Section I: Any student, faculty, staff or alumni of Georgia Tech and their spouse who subscribes to the aforementioned objectives of the SSO can become a member of this club. In order to be a member, students must be eligible for participation in extra-curricular activities as defined by the Georgia Tech Handbook and SGA policies.
Section II: There shall be no limit on the maximum number of members.
Section III: All student members shall be eligible to vote in the election for representatives of the Executive Board.
Section IV: Any member who is a student in good standing shall be eligible to hold office in the SSO, as long as he/she fulfills the requirements of the position applied for.
Section V: All members shall be required to attend at least one meeting per semester.
Article IV - Officers
Section I: The SSO shall be governed by an Executive Board, consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, all of whom are elected by the members of the organization during Spring semester of each academic year.
Section II: Officers shall be removed in this manner:
A. If an officer fails to maintain Institute requirements for holding office (good standing, for example), he or she shall resign immediately.
B. If it is believed that an officer is not fulfilling his or her constitutional duties, then a petition requesting his or her removal must be signed by at least half of the voting membership and presented at a general meeting. Then, upon verification of the validity of the petition, by the advisor, and, at least two weeks but no more than four weeks from the date of submission, another meeting shall be held at which the grievance will be presented, with both sides having the opportunity to present a case.
C. The Faculty Advisor, if appropriate, shall preside over the removal hearing. After all arguments have been heard, a secret-ballot vote shall be held. If at least two-thirds of the voting members present vote for removal, the officer shall be removed immediately.
D. If the President is removed or resigns, the Vice-President will take his/her place in the interim. All other officers will be nominated by the membership and voted on in accordance with regular election procedures.
Article V - Dues
The members shall be required to pay a membership fee of $15.00 per year or $8.00 per semester at the beginning of each semester or academic year.
Article VI - Parliamentary Procedure
All business meetings shall be governed by the procedures contained in Robert's Rules of Order.
Article VII - Constitutional Amendments
Section I: This constitution shall be amended only by a majority of the members of the Executive Board.
Section II: Written (hard copy) or electronic (e-mail) notification of all members must be made at least two weeks in advance of any proposed changes in the Constitution
Section III: Amendments are subject to the approval of the Student Government Association and of the Student Activities Committee of the Faculty Senate
Article VIII - Requirements and Duties of Officers
A. President:
a. To be able to speak Spanish fluently
b. To preside SSO meetings
c. To represent SSO at all required meetings
d. To prepare the agenda for each SSO Executive Board meeting
e. To keep the organization's faculty advisor informed of SSO activities and projects.
f. To be responsible for all SSO activities.
B. Vice-President:
a. To preside SSO meetings in the absence of the President.
b. To coordinate all details of approved activities and make sure they are carried out accordingly.
C. Secretary:
a. To keep accurate records of SSO meetings
b. To take roll during each Board meeting and keep a record of attendance of Board members.
c. To be responsible for advertising all SSO activities.
D. Treasurer:
a. To maintain a financial record for the organization.
b. To be responsible for collecting membership dues.
c. To help increase new member enrollment.
E. General Requirements:
a. All persons holding office must have been members of the SSO for at least 1 semester previous to their election.
b. All officers must be students in good standing.
F. General Duties:
a. To represent the interests of their geographical block in Board meetings.
b. To direct SSO activities towards satisfying their constituent's cultural affinities.
Article IX - Advisor
Section I. A full time GT faculty or staff member will serve as advisor to the organization.
Section II. Appointment for advisor will take place wit in the Executive Board. The Executive Board will chose the advisor and invite him/her to serve as advisor for the next academic year.
Section III. The duties of Advisor include: meeting with organization officers, reviewing the yearly budget, signing all required paperwork and advising on issues of risk management, organization leadership, and Georgia Tech policy.
Section IV. The Advisor can be removed for not carrying out the duties and expectations as defined in this document. Any member can bring concerns to the Executive Board. The Executive Board will meet with the Advisor to discuss the concerns. After this meeting, the Executive Board will vote on whether to remove the Advisor. If there is a majority vote, then the Advisor will be removed.
Section V. If an Advisor steps down or is removed, the Executive Board will follow the process stated in Article IX Section II.
