Advisement

The period of time where you are required to discuss your schedule with a member of faculty.

Alumni

Anyone who has passed any class at Georgia Tech
(We're not kidding it only takes one class.)
Alumni Association

Burger Bowl

The grassy area behind West Campus dorms and opposite the Tech police station where Greek Week events take place and rugby games are played. It is the former site of a Burger King.

Dead Week

Last week of classes before final exams.

Drop Day (D-Day)

The last day to drop a course without a penalty.

E-Mag

PHYS 2122 (under the quarter system) considered one of the most difficult / confusing classes at Tech. The saying used to go, "E-Mag, Re-Mag, Three-Mag, Management."

Flush Letters

The dreaded letters of rejection from prospective employers. Rejection may also be referred to as "getting flushed," as in "I just got flushed!"

The Good Word

To Hell with Georgia!

GPA, Overall

Cumulative grade poinr average. "My overall is 3.4. I'll do better next year."

The Hill

The area between the Administration Building (The Tower) and the Library. Also used as a general term for members of the administration. "I wonder what the Hill thought about this year's Ramblin' Wreck parade!"

Home Park

A neighborhood off 10th Street where many Tech students reside.

House

The living or meeting quarters of a fraternity or sorority. "We have a meeting at the house tonight."

The Loud Side

West side of the Library.

Ma Tech

The cherished name used by students and alumni as the personification of Georgia Tech.

M.I.T.

The Georgia Tech of the North

NASA or SST or The Dish

The Space Science and Technology Building. A huge satellite dish is propped in front of it. SST is a more popular reference.

'Nique

Nickname for The Technique, the student newspaper

North Avenue Trade School

Nickname for Tech

OSCAR

Online Student Computer Assisted Registration. A book listing courses offered each semester.

P-Plant (also POD)

Plant Operations Division (formerly Physical Plant). The department that handles the majority of Tech's maintenance needs.

PCS

Printing and Copying Services. Printing office located at 811 Marietta Street where students can get photocopies of their class notes

Peter's Park

Parking Deck on Bobby Dodd Way that has tennis and basketball courts on top of it.

Pink Parachutes

An old nickname for drop slips allowing you to withdraw from a course before the middle of the semester (Drop Day) without penalty. "Pink Slips" is more commonly used.

P.O. or Box

The student post office in the Student Center. "I'm on my way to check the box."

The Quiet Side

East side of the Library. "I'll meet you on the quiet side in 10 minutes."

RA

Resident Assistant

Rats

The traditional description of freshmen.

ROTC

The Georgia Tech ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps)

SAC

Student Athletic Complex. SAC also refers to the Stamps Fields behind the complex where intramural sports are held.

The Shaft

The campanile tower outside the Student Center

Square Root Club

An unofficial campus organization comprised of students who could raise their GPA by taking its square root.

Staff, Dr.

The finest member of Georgia Tech's faculty - teaches hundreds of course hours each semester.

Stud Center

The Student Center

TA

Teaching Assistant, usually a graduate student

The Thrillerdome

The Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald's Center, where basketball games are held.

The Tower

The Administration Building tower embellished with "TECH" in gold and white neon letters.

The V

The Varsity drive-in restaurant. Home of the "naked dog" and F.O. Also known as "The Greasy V."

The Whistle

The steam whistle that blows to signal class changes at five minutes before each hour. It also blows whenever Tech wins a home football game.

The name of the Tech faculty newspaper.

Word

a general term for any type of information, such as old quizzes or finals, that may be helpful for surviving any professor's course. "What's the word?" or "Did you get word?" Do not confuse with "The Good Word."
