(1) SCHEDULE – The facility opens at 9:00am, and everyone should arrive by 9:00am. The captain’s meeting is at 9:00am, and pool play will begin promptly at 9:30am. Typically, pool play is completed in the late afternoon and play offs can run into the early evening (see play offs format below).
(2) CAMPUS RECREATION CENTER (CRC) - all participants and guest must have their hands marked upon entrance and are restricted to 4th floor use only. The work-out equipment, pool, locker rooms, etc. are not available for use by tournament participants or their guest. Please do not bring coolers, food or drink into the facility (bottled water and Gatorade with screw on tops should be OK if kept in your gym bags). If you have take out food, fountain drinks, coffee, etc., please finish them in the lobby before returning to the 4th floor. Thank you for helping us keep the court area clean so we can continue to use the facility for future tournaments.
(3) WARM UPS - the team refereeing should start warm ups within 2 minutes after the end of the previous match and time the warm up period carefully as outlined below. Time keepers should warn the hitting teams when 2 minutes are remaining (in case they want to switch setters) and again when 1 minute is remaining (in case they want to practice serving). Later in the day, please shorten or forfeit warm up time if not needed.
A Division – 10 minutes total (2-4-4)
2 minutes – peppering for both teams
4 minutes – team serving the first game hits (including serving)
4 minutes – team receiving the first game hits (including serving)
B Division – 6 minutes total (2-4)
2 minutes – peppering for both teams
4 minutes – shared hitting (please tell the other team when hitting middle and right side)
Note: Teams not ready to play by the end of warm up’s are in jeopardy or forfeiting the match based on the discretion of the Tournament Director
(4) REFEREE RESPONSIBILITIES – The pool play schedule shows which team will referee each match. This refereeing team is responsible for providing 6 players for the following positions:
One Up Ref
One Down Ref
Two Line Judges
One Scorekeeper
One Scoreboard operator and libero tracker (the CRC has electronic scoreboards)
Note: Teams not ready to play by the end of warm up’s are in jeopardy for forfeiting the match based on the discretion of the Tournament Director
(5) RULES – standard Southern Region USAV rules apply with the following exceptions and as noted elsewhere in this document:
· The libero can serve for one player (the libero still has to sit out one play after leaving the game before re-entering for another player)
· Uniforms -- Jerseys and shorts do not have to match among a team (numbered jerseys are required but can be done with tape or a marker)
(6) POOL PLAY FORMAT - a match will consist of two games to 25, starting at 4, win by 2, with a 27 point cap. For both 5-team and 6-team pools, each team will play 4 matches or 8 games. Please note that in a 6-team pool (B Division) there is one team in the pool that your team will not play.
(7) PLAY OFFS FORMAT
A Division - Top 2 teams from each pool qualify for the play offs.
B Division – Top 3 teams will qualify for the play offs.
In both divisions, seeding within each pool will be determined based on best game won/lost record, with ties broken by head-to-head records and then by the highest point differential (total of points scored, less points scored against). Regardless of point differential, if there is a tie for 2nd place in an A Division pool (3rd place in the B Division), a tie-break game to 15, starting at zero, win by 2, no cap, will be played to break the tie. Tournament Director will evaluate three-way ties, but teams will not be eliminated from play offs based only on point differential.
Teams making the playoffs will be seeded based on game won/lost record, and point differential. In the A division, top two seeds get a bye to the semifinals. Quarterfinals is seed 3 vs. seed 6 (winner plays seed 2 with loser as referee) and seed 4 vs. seed 5 (winner plays seed 1 with loser as referee). Loser of the last semifinal match to finish will referee the finals.
Quarterfinals and Semifinals: one game to 25, starting at zero, win by 2, no cap.
Finals: best 2 out of 3 games. First two games are to 25 staring at 4, win by 2, no cap. Third game, if necessary, is to 15, starting at zero, win by 2, no cap. The Tournament Director or agreement between both captains of teams in the finals may change this format of the finals to one game to 25, starting at zero, win by 2, no cap.
