New Pictures
While we are waiting for the outcome of GT-VSA election, I have posted pictures from Charity Dinner 2007 and UVSA Olympics to keep our avid subscribers busy. I have to thank Peter for being so enthusiatic about taking pictures during these events. Because of the sheer size of his collection, I unfortunately was unable to post all of his pictures. I did tried my best to include everyone who participated in the Charity Dinner and the UVSA Olympics. It would be great if we could include pictures from other photographers too. So if anyone has additional pictures related to GT-VSA events that they would like to share, please contact me and I will do my best to post them online.April 11, 2007

Intramural Soccer (Chapter 1): GT.VSA vs. Chem Grads
by Chau Nguyen
October 10, 2006 - As the leaves turn yellow and the fall weather rushes in, the intramural soccer season has just begun. Tonight was the first game that matched the GT.VSA team against the chemistry graduates team at the CRC field #3. As soon as the clock stroke 6 PM in a windy, chilly weather both team were ready to face off.
The sound of the first whistle blow started the game. The match is divided into two 20-minute segments. In the first half, the GT.VSA stood well against the mounting pressure of the opposing team. As a result, the ball was kept in play in mid-field with several instances of GT.VSA players rushing toward the opponent's goal post. Everyone on the team did well to defend the opposing team in attack mode. Our defensive effort was rewarded with no point for the competing team.
In the second half, GT.VSA stepped up to the offensive mode and mounted several effective attacks agains the chemistry grads, who met us with equally impressive defensive measures. The opposing team, however, was able to take advantages of several weaknesses of GT.VSA team and scored two points--primarily our own inexperience and growing tiredness. Albeit several attempts to come back, GT.VSA's efforts were circumvented by the experienced graduate team.
Overall, GT.VSA did well with the first game. Being able to withstand and defend against more experienced opponent signified optimism for many players. With more practice, GT.VSA intramural soccer team will surely improve and attain synergy, which will translate to points on the score board. For more information about GT.VSA intramural soccer team, game schedule, practice time, or any other information, please contact Thien Tieu.

Latern Making
The youth group at Kim Cang monastery is planning a larntern-making event for children on the 30th of this month (1 week before Trung Thu). It's one of the efforts for younger generations to retain our culture. We would love to have anyone who knows how to make lanterns to come and help. So...1. If you'd like to help: our weekly meeting is on 1pm each Sunday at the temple. Come this Sunday or call Hien at 404.788.3091 to find out the details, or just come the day of if time is a problem for you.
2. If you want to attend: bring your younger siblings, nieces, nephews, or kids out. If you don't have any of the above, bring yourself. Lanterns are heck fun (don't deny). It's a cultural event, not a religious one, so don't worry if you're not Buddhist. I'll see to it that no one tries to convert you (j/k, we're all nice).

CET's Vietnam Immersion Program
Greetings from CET Academic Programs. My name is Adam Steckler. I am an Asia Programs Officer with CET. I am writing to introduce you and the members of Georgia Tech's VSA to CET's Vietnam Immersion program, a study abroad program based in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) that will be running programs in summer and fall 2006 and in spring 2007. I am hoping that you will take a look at our program in Vietnam, and pass on the information to others who may be interested.CET's Vietnam Immersion program is the first program of its kind, offering students a unique combination of Vietnamese language and area studies courses. The following are some of the key attributes of our program in Vietnam:
Roommates: CET's Vietnam Immersion is the very first program to house American students with Vietnamese roommates in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese students join the program from a number of institutions in throughout city. They are invited to attend program activities, thus providing more exchange opportunities. Other program features, including optional Service Internships, will challenge you to immerse yourself in everyday life.
Heritage Learners: Every term CET accepts students into its programs who have gained Vietnamese language skills from their home environment. These students-many of whom have advanced oral skills but beginning writing skills-have special needs in the classroom. CET successfully tailors classes to meet these students' needs. Other features of the curriculum include one-on-one language instruction, a required Vietnam Today seminar, and the opportunity to pursue an independent study project with local faculty.
The guidance and support of qualified staff: CET's on-site Resident Director oversees all aspects of the program. You will also benefit from the expertise of our Washington staff, who are qualified to advise and counsel you as you prepare for your program.
Financial Aid: Every term scholarships from CET are made available to outstanding students who wish to study abroad. In addition, organizations outside of CET also offer funding for study in Asia, and CET staff can help interested students seek out sources of funding.
I would be happy to send more information about the program via mail to pass on to your members.
Please note that the application deadline for the summer 2006 term is March 1 and fall 2006 is May 1. Serious candidates who cannot meet that deadline should contact CET directly to discuss their options. To read more about CET, please visit our website at CET Academic Programs
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Adam Steckler

Filipino, Hmong, Khmer, Lao and Vietnamese Heritage Language Classes for Summer 2006
The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) will offer 8-week intensive summer Heritage language and culture classes in Filipino, Khmer, Lao, Hmong and Vietnamese. The classes will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, from June 19 to August 11, 2006.These classes are intended for university students of Filipino, Hmong, Lao, Cambodian and Vietnamese ethnic backgrounds who grew up in North America and can speak/understand the language of their Southeast Asian culture (to at least a minimal degree) and would like to learn to read and write their language, as well as learn to speak it at a more sophisticated and learned level.
Students with no aural or spoken command of the language can also study at SEASSI, but would be placed in a beginning level class with non-native speakers. Placement will be determined on the first day of classes.
Students will have a chance to learn more about the traditions of the culture and how to make sense of their lives and traditions in America/Canada in an historical context. Independent, project-oriented study opportunities will also be available, in the context of modular instruction, so students who enter the program already at an intermediate literacy level can also have their educational needs met and be stimulated and challenged.
The classes are taught by experienced instructors from the United States, Canada and Southeast Asia, and make use of the latest teaching materials and methods. All classes carry one full year of university language credit. A variety of fellowships and tuition reductions are available. For more information, please visit the SEASSI Heritage Program website: SEASSI OR WISC.
Even if you've visited the above website before, please take another look, since new photos, videos and program information have recently been added for all five languages.
The specific deadlines for applying for financial aid for SEASSI 2006 vary according to type of financial aid sought. Note that the Heritage Fellowship application deadline is February 10, 2006, and the general SEASSI application deadline is April 3, 2006.

Cookout Party at Johnny's Place
Hello All,A good friend of mine, a nerd with a never-ending passion for Science, is visiting this weekend. He doesn't believe in laws of Science and challenged me to demonstrate my knowledge. As a good friend, I am planning on putting together an informative session this Sunday for him at my crib at 5.
- First, I wanted to demonstrate to him laws of thermodynamic and fundamental concepts of heat transfer (how putting raw foods on a grill will make it eatable).
- Second, I wanna show him the bio-mechanistic pathway of carbohydrates, proteins, and the generation of ATP (how eating would keep people full).
- Last but not least, the binding interaction of ethanol and membrane proteins (how drinking makes people drunk).

Tét Trung Thu
Hello everyone!!!On Sunday, Sept 11, 2005, There is a Festival for FullMoon. It is a day to tell story about Chu Cuoi, eat moon cake, laugh, have fun and light up cool lanterns as you all remembered from your childhood. If you never hear of anything like this before, I think that you should go and find out! As a member of VSA, I always support our number 1 mission statement: Promote Vietnamese culture and exhort the edification of the traditions among students. That is why I want to share with you the flyers in the attachment. If you knew this from our culture, I hope you grab this opportunity to come, meet and make friend with new people. I guarantee it will be one of the best nights of your life, for it will be the memory you have and will carry with forever!
Sincerely,
Nguyen S. Trai

On behalf of the GT-VSA and its officers, I would like to invite you to our welcoming picnic this Friday, August 26th at 5 pm in the Yellow Jacket Park in front of the Skiles building. We will provide drinks and snacks. Just come by and meet the members and officers, hang out, and toss a frisbee or football around.
The purpose of the VSA is to promote Vietnamese culture in our community, philanthropy in the Vietnamese community, and camaraderie among all students. In the past, we
- have participated in a culture fest by sharing a Vietnamese dish with the student body
- sent money to Vietnam to buy basic necessities for selective orphanages
- bought heaters, sweaters, socks, etc. for Vietnamese families who need it here in Georgia
- gave donations to the Good Shepherds Services to aid them with their after school and summer tutoring program
- helped out at soup kitchen on Saturday mornings
- host the Annual Charity Dinners where we raise money to fund these services
- have picnics, outings, movie nights, etc. to foster and maintain relationships among members
I am so incredibly excited about the year to come! The officers and I have met to do some preliminary planning for the upcoming year, and we have a very full semester ahead of us. Among the many events we are planning this year include:
- Habitat for Humanity
- soup kitchen

Volunteers Needed
Dear students & alumni,My name is Jenny Le, and I am currently a student at the University of Georgia. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with many of you through GT's VSA, UGA's VSA & UVSA. I am writing this email to ask for your help.
Over the past 3 years, I have had the wonderful opportunity of working with a senior couple I met while working at the pharmacy who didn't speak English and was cut off from their Medicaid. Because I've always wanted to be a social worker, helping them with their paperwork appealed to me. It wasn't much work at all once you knew how the system work. Tonite, I stopped by their house after work to do some renewal paperwork for the year. On my way back, I wondered how great it would be if I had other people help me with these sort of work. For example, if I couldn't make a phone call on their behalf, it would be great if I could refer them to someone else. Leading me to the idea of having a group of students/alumni who would be willing to handle paperwork for seniors or Vietnamese families who do not speak/comprehend English. Sometimes all it takes is a simple phone call to Medicaid or insurance companies. Sometimes it requires composing a letter. If I could get a group of volunteers together, we would discuss how many cases we could take in per month (depending on how many volunteers I could get). Since it's mostly paperwork, you would be working at your own pace...working from your own home. If some cases require us transporting them to DFACs or whereever, then we could come up a schedule that's convenient to us.
There are so so many details I could give you, but it wouldn't answer everyone's questions so if you're interested in this, please email me back & let me know. I will email you a time when the first meeting will take place. I really want to get this going as soon as possible so that we could advertise our free services to the community in some of the Vietnamese newspapers.
I promise you that in the end, you will walk away with so much knowledge of how Medicaid & insurance companies, etc. work. And not to mention the most important thing you will walk away with: a sense of fulfillment knowing you've made someone's life a lil easier.
Thank you so much for your time. For those whom I've already had the wonderful opportunity of working with, I look forward to working with you again. And for those whom I haven't met, I look forward to sharing this humble experience with you.
As always,
Jenny Le
