GT Wrestling - The Wrecking Crew
In 1992, Georgia Tech followed the unfortunate trend of eliminating one of the oldest and proudest sports from its collegiate program - wrestling. And even though wrestling is growing in popularity at the high school level with more than 9,000 high school teams and over 230,000 participants (including 2500 female participants), the number of collegiate competitors is diminishing rapidly. During the 1970's nearly 400 colleges supported wrestling, now only 235 remain, and wrestling loses on average, five programs every year. Keeping the Sport Alive

In 1995, the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA - www.ncwa.net ) was formed to provide a forum for college students who want to continue wrestling but do not have a varsity program. NCWA teams are primarily organized, managed, coached, and funded by the student wrestlers who belong to the team. The NCWA seeks to develop wrestling programs so that when a college does consider reinstatement of varsity wrestling, it will already be in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. The “Wrecking Crew” is one of four Georgia NCWA programs - Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University, and University of Georgia.

Rebuilding a Competitive Team
Georgia Tech Wrestling has consistently finished in the top 20 the past five of six years. These respectable finishes, year-after-year, have been helpful in scheduling and competing against sanctioned varsity programs. Georgia Tech has competed against Duke, University of Tennessee – Chattanooga, Cumberland University, Davidson College, Anderson College and UNC -Pembroke this past season. The team sponsors one the largest Open Tournaments in the southeast and captured 1 st Place in 2000. It is our ultimate goal to seek and secure NCAA reinstatement by keeping the program competitive, visible and in compliance with NCAA rules.
